[Food Photo Experiment] Pears

An experiment with nashi. It is a kind of pear with yellow skin, sweet and juicy with sandpaper-like creamy flesh inside. Perhaps there are many other varieties of nashi, these yellow-skin ones are the ones growing in our orchard, besides packhams, williams and borsch.

[Food Photo Experiment] Black is Back!

YUM! Another series I have been working on. Instantly a favourite theme this season. It seems everyone is getting into something more rather than just bright light or high key lights on food photos. You need to get out of your comfort zone for once in a while, don't you?

It's not that I am discomfort with black background or everything in black, but it is another extra attempt for the experiment sake. Knowledge can't be stopped in just finding new things in your square box, ey?

Anyway, the series I've uploaded is on black. You know what? Not as easy as it looks. Lighting plays an important role here, I can say. For I am only using natural light, there I also am playing around with composition and tones. There's no smaller light or umbrella reflectors whatsoever to support the images. I don't even need any of those.

Here are the results. Like it or not, it is a MUST for you to do it yourself :)



"Onion in Black".
I thought I pictured one breast, but it is true it is more like an eye ball or rather. Taken in one late afternoon when it was so quiet. The light is coming from the my kitchen windows. I got around 100 photos of this and it is only this one I am satisfied with.

"Berries in Black" #1
Harvested more berries from the garden.
I used black background using black cloth. There's one note I am taking here with the styling, though. The red colour coming from the two strawberries are quite a dominant tone in here, together with the woven bamboo mini basket pattern. I should have arranged the strawberry on the front to the left side of basket rather than letting it on vertical mode with the one in the basket.

"Berries in Black" #2
Using the same berries with different bowl, made by my husband.
The background I use as the backdrop is the bricks from the old fireplace indoor. The light is still coming from the kitchen windows. I only use a door from my pantry to hold the direct light from the left side of the object. I used soft focus just the last minute as I am looking at the overall result. I just like the softness of the image on this one.

Foto Experiment-Mirror Reflection

When I got a chance to be home alone, I started to prepare to shoot oranges using mirror to make reflections. I really did not have a clue how to do such work and I sort of doing trial and error. The trouble is that we only have one big mirror in the bathroom and I thought well, how am I going to do this?

Inspired by the other photo that I took before on oranges as well, I was thinking how am I going to get a reflection of the oranges from the bowl without having me in the mirror? Really, the angles are difficult, tougher work than I thought before. I searched more mirror which I found in the cottage, an old one with crinkled frame. I had to take it out of its frame and clean the mirror. The bad news was that this mirror is an oval-shaped one, not a big square one. I was a bit frustrated.

This is the first reflection I created.




Out of 100 or more clicks, I chose the one above is quite alright (although not satisfying to my eyes yet). I moved on to a simpler trick. I'd like to create a dimension where I can see the orange upside down or joining the stem. Using the big square mirror was impossible because I had to take off the frame which I did not bother to do. I tried to use the old mirror and it was difficult. I have tried different angles and compositions, but none of them is great. Here's one of them.



As you can see, the stem is sort of joining but I only could take 3/4 of the orange from the refelction. I only use my hands to create these photos. I hold the mirror on my left hand and camera on my right hand. A bit of a struggle, but hey...

Now, the last one is a still life, I mean it is really still. I only drop some orange juice on top of the fresh orange to give an image of wet and juicy. It was almost dark and my family started to unloading themselves from the car, so I had to end my own journey, back to the reality.
